Topic: Presentation Request

Hello everyone. I have been contacted by one of our local judges in reference to giving a one hour presentation on the topic of polygraph to a Criminal Justice class that he teaches at our local junior college. In the past he used one of our older examiners who is no longer employed with our agency. I can structure the presentation how ever I like and present what ever information that I choose. Since I have never done anything like this, I wanted to get some ideas from some of you that have. I would gladly appreciate any input or material that would help me have a successful presentation. Ralph, This might be an area where we could all benefit. If we could figure out a place within the private forum where we could upload files like PowerPoint presentations so that we all have access to them. It would be easier than trying to send them by eamil with the anti-virus stuff so strong these days.IP: Logged |

I don't recall how to get to mine, but with DSL, many of us have the ability to create web pages ourselves. That is, we can upload files, post the link, and let others download whatever is there (like Ray does). If people can see if they have that option and can learn how to use it, then we could do more. (I can look and see what I need to do, but right now, I don't even know the master password on my Verizon account. Assuming I figure that out, it's almost as simple as dragging and dropping into a program that uploads to the site.) I suspect many of us here have that ability already, but we've just never looked at it (or. like me, didn't want to figure out how to do it).IP: Logged |

Donna, Christian and Mark,I just sent it. Congratulations, you are all now in possession of stolen property!!!! I use this as a template and then tweek it to fit the group I am presenting it to. Obviously, you don't want to use the "Defense Whores" slide in your presentation to the girl scouts!

Ray,Can I send a copy of the PDF to Dr. Marty Safer of the Catholic University? He's a cognitive (research) psychologist (an eyewitness memory guru), and just yesterday I was speaking to him about some issues and we talked about polygraph. He said he only really knew (about polygraph) what he learned from David Lykken and some introductory texts (I addressed that - from a scientific perspective). I sent him the Hont's and Raskin's chapter, but this would be nice too. He said his students always ask about polygraph in some of his classes, and up until now he's only thought he knew anything about it. IP: Logged |

I have sent my slide presentations to those who have asked for it by email. A couple of the slides require a little explanation or setup to understand.While explaining inconclusive results, in one of my slides, you see the word "son" on the screen, I ask the audience to tell me what that word is. The next mouse click makes the word "person" (by adding the "per" in front). I ask again. The next mouse click adds the letters "al" making the word "personal" and the last click of the mouse adds the letters "ty" making the word "personality" I explain that we now have conclusive results because we know from our knowledge of the
English language that nothing else can be added to change the outcome or, in other words, our data is now complete and sufficient to "make the call"
The bell curve slides simply show that we purposely skew our criminal specific tests to protect against false negatives or "letting the bad guy get away". As a result, we accept some NDI people being called inconclusive in the process. This also means that when we do call someone as NDI, they are pretty far out on the curve and less likely to be a decision error. Simplistic, I know, but it helps the layman understand inconclusives and how we score charts.
